Nassau was formerly known as Charles Town but was burned to the ground by the Spanish in 1684. The official city of Nassau was built in 1695. In 1712 Nassau became a center for many well known pirates such as Edward Teach or "Blackbeard".

In 1718 the island was put back under control by Captain Woodes Rogers who sailed to Nassau with a small fleet and successfully reclaimed the island. Rogers put Nassau under control and even stopped attempts by the Spanish to recapture it in 1720.

Nassau was used mostly for farming in its early years and is an island rich with culture and history.
